Dewald started cycling in high school but put it aside for a while to focus on University studies. After his studies he got back on the bike and soon the racing bug bit! XCO was his discipline of choice and later he progressed to participating in marathons, road races and more recently ultra endurance events. He is a sucker for suffering, and the harder the terrain and more miserable the weather the better he
perform – mental strength kicks in!
To date his favourite events to do are Trans Baviaans and Sani2C. His cycling career highlights have to be 1st at Cullinan2Tonteldoos in 2017, 1st Waterberg Traverse 290km and a 3rd at Munga Grit 500km in 2020. Obtaining Gauteng XCO colours was another career goal he achieved in 2016 and 2020 and he also did a few tandem road
races with his fancé and they managed some mixed tandem podium spots including 2nd at Amashova.
He thrives on cycling data; gaining and sharing knowledge on training methods, bike technology and improving skills.
He had dabbled in coaching and he is really looking forward to becoming a UCI certified coach and continuing his career path with The Practice.
He enjoys a good adventure on the bike and have taken on some memorable bikepacking adventures with his Fancé. Plotting out routes in unknown countries might seem scary to some but it’s an absolute thrill for him – they have backpacked around Reunion island and Bali on a bike and that is
the best way to experience places, people and cultures.
He definitely has a competitive side when it comes to racing but nothing beats a fun ride out with friends, exploring new trails and places. South Africa has a lot to offer mountain bikers.
